Vital Information for High Schoolers

§       Academic (24 credit hours)

§       Advanced Academic (26 credit hours)

o      Credit hours: one credit hour is comprised of 36 weeks at 50 minutes per day, or 150 hours per semester

~    Course & Extracurricular Options

o      Honors Courses- Definition: Core courses taken by high school students, as part of an accelerated program through a junior college or in an advanced manner as approved by the ECS administration will be granted honors recognition on their high school transcript. ECS Administration approval must be given for a course to earn Honors credit.

o      AP® Courses- Designed for highly motivated high school students these classes must meet AP® requirements as described in the AP® Course Description booklets. These booklets can be downloaded free of charge from AP® Central by following the Course Descriptions link. The courses also may be taught by a certified AP® teacher. College placement or credit may also be given based on the student’s performance on rigorous Advanced Placement® examinations. These exams are given once a year on a designated date. It is possible to take the exam without having taken an AP® course. Barnes and Noble and Books-a-Million stores carry AP® Prep exam books. Information regarding the exam can be obtained from www.apcentral.collegeboard.com

§       Q: Can I take the AP Examination if I haven't taken an AP course?

§       A: Yes. Because the College Board is committed to providing access to the AP Exams to homeschooled students and students whose schools do not offer AP it does not require students to take an AP course prior to taking an AP Exam. The College Board urges students to study the kinds of skills and subjects outlined in the Course Description for each subject, because they represent the basis for the AP Examination. The best way to do so is in a year-long AP course in which the students and teachers focus on AP-level work. Some students, however, have taken strong courses and/or have studied in depth on their own. Such students may be able to perform quite well on the AP Exam. Note: cost of AP test: $84/test
