Language Arts

Writing

  • Course Description: Covers the basic modes of writing and research papers with weekly assignments. 

  • Cost: $160.00/semester + $40.00 registration fee due July 1 ($50.00 registration fee after July 1)

  • Time: Tuesdays, 8:30-9:45. (If this class fills, another will be provided on Tuesdays as well, 10:30-11:45)

World Literature/Western Civilization History -

  • Course Description: A two (2) credit course integrating literature and history, 1600 to the present using the same textbook used at Jeff State Community College, University of Montevallo, University of Alabama, and Samford University.

*Mrs. Houser holds a Master of Fine Arts Degree, and has more than 27 years of teaching experience at both the high school and collegiate level. She currently serves on the faculty of Evangel Classical Christian School, where she teaches Upper School Literature, Drama, and Logic.

British Literature -

  • Course Description: The instructor uses her years of experience as a theatre teacher to help British literature "come alive" for her students. Bob Jones British Literature for the Christian Student, Second Edition is the foundational text of this class. Whenever possible, course content is supplemented and learning is enhanced with students acting out literary works using real theatrical scripts. Some writing is required; however, emphasis is on reading, analyzing, and enjoying the material. Geared toward 11-12th graders. The student will provide his own copy of the textbook, The Pilgrim's Progress, Great Expectations, and Julius Caesar.  (Specific ISBN #'s will be provided.)

American Literature -

  • Course Description: The class will be a survey of American literature from the Puritans to the present and will also include instruction in literary writing. The text selections may be purchased, checked out of libraries, or found online

Marine Biology

  • Course Description: Covers Apologia Marine Biology curriculum and all lab work/dissection. Study concentrates on marine wildlife and marine habitats. A survey of the members of each biological kingdom that live in marine environments. Experimental emphasis with the use of both microscope and dissection.

  • Prerequisites: This is a High School level course; students who have taken Biology are ready for this course.

  • Text: Exploring Creation with Marine Biology by Sherri Seligson (Apologia Educational Ministries). Can be purchased at www.naturesworkshopplus.com, www.Christianbook.com, or locally at The Amen Corner.

  • Cost: $55/month + lab fees

Saxon Curriculum Algebra I through Calculus (Plus Physics)

Foreign Languages -

Latin -

Spanish I -

  • Course Description: We will be using Spanish One using the Bob Jones 2nd edition Spanish I textbook (paper back). The Activities Manual and the CDs for Spanish One are also required. The CDs will be handed out the first of class and there is a $10.00 charge for the CDs. We will cover greetings, the alphabet, grammar, proper sentence construction and conversation using oral exercises weekly. Each student will learn how to share Christ and memorize Scripture verses. Every one will have the opportunity to research a Spanish speaking country of his/her choice. They have six weeks to complete their research and find the required information. Each student will be expected to share their findings with the class. At a later date, they will need to fix a dish from their country and bring it to class for a luncheon (this is the best part of the Spanish class)! The proper amount of homework will be assigned each week to cover the necessary hours in the subject to constitute one high school credit in a foreign language. One time during the year, we will go out as a class to either lunch or dinner, whatever works best for the majority of the students. This will give each one an opportunity to practice what they have learned. Syllabus

  • Cost: Registration Fee: $40.00. Class fee is $300.00. You may pay it all at once, $150.00 in September and $150.00 in January or $35.00 monthly. There is a $15.00 savings if you pay the total balance in September or half in September and half in January. The CDs will be handed out the first of class and there is a $10.00 usage charge for the CDs. The CDs must be returned to me on the last day of class in May. I order the tests and there is an $8.00 cost for tests. When: Thursday mornings: 10:00am -12:00pm, beginning September 4, 2008.

  • Time: Wednesday mornings: 11:00am -1:00pm, beginning September 4, 2008. A second class day will most likely be added. Contact Mrs. Samper for details.

  • Instructor: Rosie Samper, homeschooling mom for sixteen years; Spanish teacher for seven years. Mrs. Samper is a native Spanish speaker. Many of her students have gone on to CLEP Spanish in colleges and universities. Logic -

  • Course Description: This class is designed to improve 8th through 12th grade students thinking, analyzing, and communication skills through the study of traditional logic

  • Text: Traditional Logic: Introduction To Formal Logic, Martin Cothran

  • Cost: $45.00 per month, plus cost of text book (approximately $35.00)

  • Time: Monday, 3:15

  • Course Goals:

    1. Master basic grammar and concepts of Formal Logic.
    2. Learn to write speeches in several formats such as informative, persuasive, and speeches to entertain.
    3. Research and take part in a Lincoln Douglas Debate.
    4. Learn to recognize informal logic terms and fallacies in the everyday world. Terms such as ad hominem, ad vericundiam, and ad populum.
    5. Build confidence so that students can logically counter a culture that is hostile to Christianity.

Principles of Finance

Theatre Performance -

  • Course Description: This 12 week class will focus specifically on preparing a one act play for performance.  We will begin meeting in mid-August and end with our performance before Thanksgiving Break.

  • Cost: $100

  • Time: Wed 3:45-5:00

  • Location: Evangel Gymnasium Stage

  • Class size: limited to 5 males and 9 females.  The class will be closed when these roles are filled.

*Classes and times subject to change.

  • Class Availability: Class size is limited and will be offered only on a first-come, first-serve basis. Classes require a minimum number of students to be able to be offered. If you plan to enroll, do so as early as possible to avoid any unnecessary class cancellations.

  • Refunds: Should Evangel Tutorials be unable to make any of these class offerings available, a full refund will be issued. Refunds will not be granted after the first two class sessions of each semester. If a refund is requested before the third class session of any semester, 75% of the Class Cost for that semester may be refunded, with the instructor reserving the final right to refuse any refunds. If a student drops out of the Tutorials Program completely before the third class of the first semester, 50% of the total Registration Fee will be refunded.  All Refund Requests must be submitted in writing to the instructor and to the school office, and must include a reason for the request.


Enrollment for Classes

To enroll for any of the classes, simply contact the instructor directly to enroll for their class. Once classes are filled and the rolls closed, the instructor will submit his/her roll to the ECS Offices and you will be invoiced for the appropriate Tutorials Administrative/Facility Usage Fee.

The Tutorials Administrative/Facility Usage Fee for ECS students is $25/family. For students enrolled in other schools, the fee is $75/family. The instructor will provide individual payment details and any further information for his/her class(es).

Late Enrollments will be assessed on a per student basis at a rate of $25/student. Late fees are assessed after the first class meeting.

Conduct Standards

All students enrolled in Evangel Tutorials classes agree to willingly subject themselves to all the Standards of Conduct of Evangel Christian School, Briarwood Christian School, and/or Evangel Church, PCA, and to any corresponding discipline, should these standards be violated.
