September 14, 2007: McWane Center at Evangel – “Enlightening Electricity II”
What is the difference between a conductor and an insulator? How does a circuit work? Students will study the difference between static electricity in this program. There will be an emphasis on atoms, electrons, watts, amps and currents. Grades 2-6
• Time: 10:00 a.m.
• Cost: $3.00 per student; parents/children four and under free
• Location: Evangel School Gym


September 27, 2007: Children’s Theater – Wee Folks Presents “Rumpelstiltskin”
This is a classic tale about a young girl, a handsome king, a taxing promise, and a clever, little man who can spin straw into gold. Will the girl find out the magic name to unlock the promise? The audience helps participate in this fun and lively version of the original story. Grades Pre-K to 1
• Time: 9:30 a.m.
• Cost: $6.00 per person
• Location: Wee Folks Theater at BJCC


October 11, 2007: Children’s Theater – “The Wind in the Willows”
Mole has never seen a river until he encounters his water-loving friend Rat. Along with their less-than-social friend Badger, these friends of the Wild Wood try to help their friend Toad who is obsessed with stealing and crashing motorcars. While Toad is put in jail for the abuse of property, the sneaky weasels take over Toad Hall. Mole, Rat, and Badger must find a way to bring Toad back to his senses and law-abiding order back to the Wild Wood. Grades 1-6
• Time: 10:00 a.m.
• Cost: $6.00 per person

October 12: Visit to Montgomery – Tour of Capitol Building, Judicial Building and First White House of the Confederacy
This tour will begin with a forty-five minute guided tour of the State Capitol Building. One of a few state capitols designated a National Historic Landmark, the Alabama State Capitol is where Jefferson Davis took the oath of office as President of the C.S.A. and where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered a speech from the bottom of its steps. Many rooms have been restored to their Civil War-era and turn-of-the-century appearances. Next, we will tour the Judicial Building, just a walk away from the Capitol. There, we will learn about the history of the legal profession and judicial branch of government in Alabama. A picnic lunch on the grounds of the Capitol will follow. After the lunch, those interested will go to the First White House of the Confederacy for a self-guided tour.
• Time: 9:30 – 2:30
• Cost: Free.
• Location: Montgomery
• Directions: There is meter parking at the Capital, but it is limited to two hours. Other parking is available; detailed parking and code of conduct information will be emailed to field trip participants in October.


October 17, 2007: Alabama Symphony Orchestra at the Alabama Theater – “The Sounds are all Around You”
This performance features music by Beethoven, Mozart, Tchaikovsky, and more. It is geared to help young people notice the music all around them all the time! Grades K-3
• Time: 10:00 a.m.
• Cost: $3.00 per person
• Location: Alabama Theatre


November 1, 2007: Children’s Theater – “Peter and the Wolf” with the Alabama Symphony Orchestra
This classic story of Peter and the Wolf begins with a twist involving the Russian writer himself. In this new for BCT adaptation, we meet Sergei Prokofiev and Natalya Satz as they are in the middle of creating a “symphonic fairy tale for children”. We watch and listen as they begin to match instruments in the orchestra with possible characters for a story. The flute sounds like a bird; the oboe like a duck quacking. The clarinet is smooth and aloof like a cat. The instruments define the characters and from those characters, a story is discovered. All ages

November 9, 2007: American Village – “Thanksgiving”
Best suited for grades K-3, this program offers students the chance to participate in a meaningful, seasonal program while they travel with Miles Standish on the Mayflower.
• Time: Arrive at 9:00; program is 9:30-11:00. Picnic tables are available.
• Cost: Free to Shelby County Students. Other students are $8. All Adults are $8. Four and under are free.
• Directions: Take I-65 S to Exit 238 (Alabaster/Saginaw) and go right or north on 31 for about 1/3 a mile. Take a left onto 119 at the next major intersection. Go approximately 8 miles; American Village is on the right. Alternate directions given at www.AmericanVillage.org
• Info: Since students will be involved in outside activities, dress for the weather and don’t forget sunscreen and cameras. Videotaping is prohibited. Additional code of conduct information will be emailed to participants prior to the trip.


November 29, 2007: Children’s Theater – “Santa’s Adventure”
It's Christmas Eve at the Merrywood Mega Mall and there are lots of children there to see Santa. As the last of the children leave, the night watchman locks the doors, leaving Santa locked inside. Along with Dottie, a clerk, and Amanda, a broken mannequin, Santa tries to find a way out and the adventure begins.
• Time: 9:30 a.m.
• Cost: $6.00 per person
• Location: Children’s Theater Mainstage at BJCC


November 30, 2007: American Village – “Liberty!”
Liberty! is the premiere program of American Village. Visitors are active participants in the Stamp Act Rally, unrest in the streets of Boston in 1775, the Virginia Convention and more. The program appeals to all learning and is recommended for grades 4 and up.
• Time: Arrive at 9:00; program is 9:30-12:30. Lunch is immediately after the program. Picnic tables are available for lunchtime.

December 12, 2007: Alabama Ballet – “Nutcracker”
Alabama Ballet presents its sixth annual performance of The Nutcracker. With opulent sets and dazzling costumes, the ballet is sure to enchant children and adults alike. For ages 6 and up; no one under 6 allowed.
• Time: 10:00 a.m.
• Cost: Free for students and $20 per adult
• Location: Samford University’s Wright Center


December 13, 2007: Children’s Theater – “Christmas Carol”
A Christmas Carol is a classic tale of the miser Ebenezer Scrooge. Scrooge's "humbug" attitude toward Christmas and his assistant lead a ghost from his past to visit on Christmas Eve. His former partner Jacob Marley warns Scrooge of visits from the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Come. Experience Scrooge's transformation on the BCT mainstage and see the amazing costumes, set, and characters in this lively, timeless, classic story.

January 11, 2008: McWane Center at Evangel – “Rocks and Minerals”
Smell, scratch, and even taste! Your students will perform various tests in order to identify minerals and to classify rocks in this program for aspiring geologists. Grades 4-8
• Time: 10:00 a.m.
• Cost: $3.00 per student; parents and children four and under free
• Location: Evangel School Gym


February 6, 2008: Alabama Symphony Orchestra – “Music for Living”
Music affects our lives in powerful ways – what would our life be like without music? It can celebrate, mourn, soothe, uplift, and praise. This program will help students explore the function of music in our society. The performance will feature music by Dukas, Handel, Bizet, Strauss, Beethoven, Stravinsky and more. Grades 4-8
• Time: 10:00 a.m.
• Cost: $3.00 per person
• Location: BJCC Concert Hall


February 7, 2008: Children’s Theater – Wee Folks Presents “Jack and the Beanstalk”
When Jack trades the family cow for magic beans, his mother is so disappointed. However, the beans grow a stalk so tall that it disappears into the clouds. Jack sets off to explore a strange land in the clouds at the end of the beanstalk. This adaptation is filled with adventure, fun, and audience interaction as Jack confronts the giant to bring home fortune to his poor mother. Grades Pre-K to First
• Time: 9:30 a.m.

February 14, 2008: Children’s Theater – “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer”
The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is based on the classic story by Mark Twain. Tom's adventures begin with a whitewashed fence, a sweet girl named Becky, Huckleberry Finn, and tales of pirating and treasure hunting. Only after a surprising funeral and a murder trial where the truth is uncovered does the audience see Tom not only as an adventurer but also as a moral hero. Grades 1-6
• Time: 10:00 a.m.
• Cost: $6.00 per person

March 7, 2008: Alabama Shakespeare Festival – “The Count of Monte Cristo”
Swashbuckling adventure, lavish costumes, and brilliant sets make this classic play a must-see. The play explores the theme of revenge when a character is wrongly convicted of supporting Napoleon and is imprisoned for 13 years. After his escape, he tracks down those that betrayed him. Contact Person: Roxanne Berry at 620-6667 or 910-2194. Grades 8-12; younger children not permitted.
• Time: 9:30 a.m. arrival time at Festival Stage
• Cost: $14.00 per student; $16.00 per adult
• Location: Alabama Shakespeare Festival at Blount Cultural Park in Montgomery
• Directions: from Birmingham, take I-65 South to Montgomery to I-85 North to Exit 6, East Blvd. Once on Exit 6, take the first off-ramp for East Blvd. heading south. When the lanes divide, stay in the left lane under the signs for Carmichael Rd. and Woodmere Blvd. At the stop sign at the end of the off-ramp, you can only turn right. Once you do so, you will want to merge into the left-hand lane. At the second light (bank on the corner), make a left onto Woodmere Blvd. Entrance to the Wynton M. Blount Cultural Park is 1/2 mile on right.


March 13, 2008: Brierfield Civil War (or War Between the States) Program
Join us at the Brierfield Ironworks Park as we spend the day learning about the War in small sessions taught by historians, history professors, etc. Topics will include arms and equipment, medicine, cavalry, women in the war, uniforms, flags, etc. All ages.

• Directions: I 65 South to Hwy 25, Calera exit. Go south on Hwy 25 for approximately 15 miles. The park entrance is on the left - 240 Furnace Parkway.

March 27, 2008: Children’s Theater – “Romeo and Juliet”
The tragic tale of star-crossed lovers opens in the Renaissance Italian city of Verona. Members of two powerful families, the Montagues and Capulets, have been fighting in the streets, prompting the ruling prince to issue an ultimatum: No more bloodshed or Lord Montague and Lord Capulet will pay with their own lives. Amid the strife, Romeo and Juliet begin a romance that leads to sorrow and eventually peace. Grades: 7-12; not for younger children.

April 30, 2008: Alabama Symphony Orchestra – “Putting It Together”
How does the Alabama Symphony Orchestra put together a performance? Many important people work together onstage and off to present a performance. Learn about the roles of the conductor, composer, musicians, and the audience. The performance will include music by Strauss, Ives, Tchaikovsky, and Shostakovich. Grades 4-8
• Time: 10:00 a.m.
• Cost: $3.00 per person
• Location: BJCC Concert Hall
