Evangel Christian School Field Trips, 2007-2008

PLEASE NOTE THAT SOME TRIPS HAVE AGE RESTRICTIONS.

Sign-up deadline is August 16th if you will be attending the August 22nd McWane trip.  If not, your deadline is August 31st. 


August 22:  McWane Center at Evangel – “Science with a Bang”

Heat up the classroom as we explore the science of combustion. Students get fired up about science with a series of experiments that demonstrate the differences between explosions and combustion, the elements of the combustion triangle and some unexpected materials that make good fuels. Grades 3rd - 8th.

·       Time:  10:00 a.m. session and an 11:00 session

·       Cost:  $3 per student; parents and children 4 and under are free

·       Location:  Evangel School Gym


September 12:  Anniston Museum of Natural History and Berman Museum

These two museums are located next door to each other with a nice picnic area and garden as part of the grounds.  The Anniston Museum includes many exhibits including Dynamic Earth, Ancient Egypt, Birds of Americas and Environments of Africa.  The Berman Museum displays over 8,000 artifacts, paintings and objects from around the world.  See annistonmuseum.org and bermanmuseum.org for more information.  Bring picnic lunch.

·       Time:  10:00 at Anniston Museum; please arrive no later than 9:45

This trip will be about 4 ½ hours long.

·       Cost:  $6.50 per person; children three and under are free

·       Location:  Anniston, Alabama

·       Directions: Take I-20 to Atlanta; take exit 185 and go north or left on Hwy 31; the Museums are 7 miles north in Lagarde Park at the junction of Hwys 431 and 21.


September 25:  Children’s Theater – Wee Folks Presents “City Mouse, Country Mouse”

Montague Mouse lives in a hotel in the city, his cousin Maudie Mae lives on a farm.  They decide to visit each other but find themselves scared and uncomfortable in their new surroundings.  Come see how teamwork and understanding help them find a vacation place they can both enjoy. Recommended for grades PreK - 1st.

·       Time:  9:30 a.m.

·       Cost:  $6 per student; $7 per adult

September 30:  Golden Flake Factory Tour

For anyone not from the Birmingham area, Golden Flake is the maker of chips and snacks that are famous in Alabama.  Must be five or older to tour the factory; you must wear rubber-soled shoes with a closed-toe and closed-heel.  See goldenflake.com for more info.

·       Time:  9:30 a.m.

·       Cost:  Free

·       Location:  Birmingham Factory

·       Directions:  Take the University Blvd Ext (259) off I-65.  Turn left at the first light onto 11th St. South.  Take a left at the next light onto 6th Ave. South.  Go to the second light and turn right onto 6th St. South just past the railroad viaduct.  You will see a Golden Flake Tour sign at the corner of the 6th Ave. and 6th St.  Go ¼ mile.


October 15:  Alabama Symphony Orchestra at the Alabama Theater – “Let’s Build an Orchestra”

This performance explores the building blocks that make up an orchestra.  After the Concert, walk one block to McWane Science Center for a free visit.  For grades K- 3rd .

·       Location:  Alabama Theater


October 16:  Children’s Theater – “Rapunzel”

This classic fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm is sure to delight all ages.  It is an enchanting portrayal of a girl, Rapunzel, and her long golden hair.  Locked away by a wicked witch, Rapunzel longs for rescue.  A prince happens to hear her singing from her tower, and battles with the wicked witch Gothel to free Rapunzel.  Recommended for grades PreK - 2nd.

·       Time:  10:00 a.m.

·       Cost:  $6 per student; $7 per adult

·       Location:  Children’s Theater Mainstage at BJCC


October 24:  Old Baker Farm “American Civil War & Living History Day”

See a reenactment, equipment and uniforms used; camp life and food; soap making.  There is also a hayride, corn maze and other attractions.  Old Baker Farm was homesteaded over 200 years ago and has seen six generations of the Baker family.  Recommended for grades 3rd - 6th.  See oldbakerfarm.com for more information.  Bring picnic lunch.

·       Location:  Harpersville, Alabama

·       Directions:  Take Hwy 280 East; at Hwy 25 in Harpersville, turn right.  Turn right onto County Rd 444; go 1 mile and the farm is on the left.


October 30:  Alabama Ballet presents “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde”

This Alabama Ballet original is based on the book by Robert Louis Stevenson.  Recommended for grades 7th - 12th.

·       Time: 10:00 a.m.

·       Cost:  Students Free; $18 per adult

·       Location:  Samford University Wright Center


November 14:  Heart of Dixie Railroad Museum

This is the official railroad museum of Alabama.  The restored depot features artifacts and memorabilia.  The outside railroad yard has locomotives and other equipment.  There is also a library.  We will have a docent provide information and a tour of the museum and library.  A nice, shaded picnic area is a great place for a picnic lunch. Go to hodrrm.org for more information.  Please note:  the trains run on Saturdays only most of the year.  We are not riding the trains on this field trip!  Bring picnic lunch.

·       Location:  Calera, Alabama

·       Directions:  Go South on I-65; take a right at the Calera Exit (228) and go .6 miles South on Hwy 25.  Turn left on 9th Street; go two blocks. 


December 4:  Children’s Theater –  WeeFolks Presents “Dear Santa”

Oh, no! Santa Claus is going to retire and he's holding auditions to find a replacement. Will it be Mrs. Claus, Prancer the Reindeer, Billy Blizzard the Dancing Snowman or an electronic Robo-Claus? With help from Dottie the Gift-Wrap Girl, the audience joins in a letter-writing campaign to convince Santa to stay on the job.  Grades PreK - 2nd.

December 11:  Children’s Theater – “Best Christmas Pageant Ever”

A hilarious holiday story that will appeal to all ages. No one wants to be in the annual Christmas play at the local church except six irascible siblings who have never heard the Christmas story. Ultimately, their energy and sincerity triumphs over their confusion as they make this year’s pageant the best ever

·       Cost:  $7 per student; $8 per adult

December 16:  Alabama Ballet – “Nutcracker”

Alabama Ballet presents its seventh annual performance of The Nutcracker.  With opulent sets and dazzling costumes, the ballet is sure to enchant children and adults alike.  For ages 6 and up; no one under 6 allowed.

·       Time:  10:00 a.m.

·       Cost:  Students Free; $18 per adult

·       Location:  Samford University’s Wright Center


January 16: McWane Center at Evangel – “Amazing Animals”

McWane brings some of its critters to us.  We will learn a little bit about their habits and will get to touch and pet a few.  For grades K – 8th.

·       Time:  10:00 a.m. first session and a 10:45 session

·       Cost:  $3 per student; parents and children four and under are free

·       Location:  Evangel School Gym


January 23: McWane Center at Evangel – “Detective H2O”

The water’s just fine!  Or is it?  Use scientific tests to get clues about what is in the water and the environment’s health. For grades 7th  – 12th.

·       Time:  10:00 a.m.

·       Cost:  $3 per student; parents and children four and under are free

·       Location:  Evangel School Gym


February 5: Children’s Theater –  WeeFolks Presents “Goldilocks and The Three Bears”

Goldilocks is a lively girl who has one big problem: she can't keep her hands off Other People's Things! Watch as Goldilocks gets into trouble with everything from a jewelry box to a bird's nest and see what happens in that little cottage in the woods while the bears are out for a walk. In a new twist, Goldilocks is caught on tape and is taught a lesson by the bears and the audience.  Recommended for grades PreK – 2nd.

February 6: McWane Center at Evangel – “Glider Motion”

A hands-on science activity that involves engineering design challenges.  For grades 4th  – 8th.  This will be limited to 35 students.

February 11:  Alabama Symphony Orchestra – “Paint to Music”

Enjoy the sounds of the ASO and watch slides of some of today’s best artists – YOU!  Students are invited to submit paintings for consideration in a live slide show during the concert!  For grades 4th – 12th.

·       Time:  10:00 a.m.

·       Cost:  $3 per person

·       Location:  BJCC Concert Hall


February 12:  Children’s Theater –Presents “The Snow Girl”

This play is fable based on a Russian folk tale and is set in a land of pure, white snow.  The wood carver, Ivanovitch, and his wife, Maroosha, wish for a child of their own. One night in the woods, Ivanovitch builds a snow statue of a young girl who suddenly comes to life and begins to dance. The rest of the story is told in dialogue and through dancing, with the snowgirl facing challenges and learning what it is like to be human and to live in a real family. Exquisite ballet dancing and exotic Russian music transform this land of cold and ice into a warm and endearing family experience.  Recommended for grades 2nd – 6th.

February 19:  Children’s Theater – “George Washington Carver”

Birmingham Children's Theatre will be honoring Black History Month with a specially-made production highlighting the life and accomplishments of George Washington Carver. Please join BCT for this unique look at black history designed with students and family in mind. Recommended for grades 2nd – 12th.

March 6:  Moundville Archaeological Park

Eight hundred years ago, Moundville was the largest city in North America.  At the Archeological Park, we can tour the Mounds and learn about the Mississippian culture that existed in central Alabama for hundreds of years.  The Museum may not be open by the time of our trip due to renovations, but the rest of the park is available and will take most of the day to fully explore.  See moundville.ua.edu for more information.  Bring picnic lunch.

·       Cost:  $5 per adult; $3 per student; children 5 and under are free

·       Location:  Moundville, Alabama

·       Directions:  From Birmingham, take I-20/59 West to Tuscaloosa.  From I-20/59 take Exit 71A and go 13 miles south.  The park is on the right.


March 27:  Ave Maria Grotto

This four-acre park features more than 125 miniature replicas of world-famous buildings and sites such as Jerusalem, St. Peter’s Basilica and the hanging gardens of Babylon.  The park is located on the grounds of Alabama’s only Benedictine Abbey which is listed on the National Register of Historic Sites.  Brother Joseph Zoettl spent 50 years creating the replicas.  Recommended for grades 4th -12th..  Bring picnic lunch.

·       Cost:  $5 for 13 and over; $3.50 for children 6-12; children 5 and under are free

·       Location:  St. Bernard Drive at St. Bernard Abbey in Cullman, Alabama

·       Directions:  Take I-65 North; Exit right on Hwy 278.  Go app. 3 miles and turn right onto College Hill Drive SE.  This will end at the St. Bernard Drive.  These directions came from Mapquest.com; you may want to google/search for your own.


April 17: Blue Bell Factory Tour

There is a short movie about the history and making of ice cream, then a guided plant tour.  The Ice Cream Parlor is also open for our dining pleasure (because ice cream makes people happy!)  See bluebell.com for more information.

·       Location:  423 North Norton Avenue, Sylacauga Alabama

·       Directions:  Take Hwy 280 East; in Sylacauga, turn left onto West Fort Williams Street; go app. 1 ½ miles and turn left onto North Norton Ave.


April 22:  Alabama Symphony Orchestra – “An American Celebration”

Celebrate American culture through one of its greatest achievements – its music.  Students will discover the strong influence that music has on our culture and history.  For grades 4th – 12th .

·       Time:  10:00 a.m.

·       Cost:  $3 per person

·       Location:  BJCC Concert Hall


May 1:  Southern Museum of Flight

We will have a guided tour of the exhibit halls that include many artifacts including the Wright Flyer and SR71 Blackbird.  We will also have a hands-on experiment using gliders.  There is a picnic area on the grounds.  See southernmuseumofflight.org for more information.  Bring picnic lunch.

·       Location: Birmingham, 4343 73rd Street North

·       Directions:  Take the Birmingham Airport Exit 129 off I-59 and follow the green and white Southern Museum signs.  The Museum is 2 blocks from the airport.
