Drama (Junior High Theatre Class)
“These Arts, in their highest province, are not addressed to the gross senses, but to the desires of the mind, to that spark of divinity which we have within.” —Sir Joshua Reynolds, 1786
Course Description: Sir Joshua Reynolds understood, perhaps better than we, that the fullest expression of what man thinks and feels can best be illustrated through the arts. Because of its emotional quotient, drama often can express what words alone fail to. Words often fail us. How is man to express heavenly ideas using earthly language? The joy of drama is its ability to communicate profound ideas, often with simple elements, for those who have eyes to see. Drama, which uses all the senses, speaks to the intuitive side of man, which through God’s Grace can help us understand who we are and our relationship to God. For as noted Christian author and educator Frank E. Gaeblein has told us, “Christian education is the living union of subject matter and the infinite pattern of God’s truth”. A careful study of drama equips the students with the grammar of dramatic artistic endeavor with the study of technique and style germane to a particular epoch. The students are taught to observe carefully the play being studied, see how the drama reflects that particular culture, and how it relates to the human condition. Through this satisfying and fun process the student begins to see that drama in its whole-some sense is a reflection of Truth, Beauty and Goodness, and gives them the ability and confidence to be communicators for Christ.” -Gaebelein, Frank E, The Pattern of God’s Truth.
Time: Wednesdays 3:30-5:00
Performances: Main Stage performance February, date to be given later, small end of year performance May
Rehearsals: Additional rehearsal times week of performance, calendar with times given out first month of class

Government/Economics
Course Description: Alexis de Tocqueville wrote that Democracy is not just a form of government but an all-encompassing way of life. Forms of governments are encompassing but in very different ways- they affect the way we order our social and economic life as well as the habits of mind. The question is how do they shape our habits of life? It is essential that we know and understand the US Constitution and our Republic form of government as set up by the Founding Fathers. What are our “first freedoms” and how are they protected and preserved? What we must know, as citizens and Christians, is how and why we have the government we have. In addition, students will learn the principles of economics through creative projects that teach economic systems, trade, supply and demand etc.
Class will count as a ½ credit in Government, and ½ credit in Economics, or full year history credit, or as an elective. Many colleges require Government and Economics as part of High School transcripts.
