Drama (High School Theatre Class)
“These Arts, in their highest province, are not addressed to the gross senses, but to the desires of the mind, to that spark of divinity which we have within.” —Sir Joshua Reynolds, 1786
Course Description: Sir Joshua Reynolds understood, perhaps better than we, that the fullest expression of what man thinks and feels can best be illustrated through the arts. Because of its emotional quotient, drama often can express what words alone fail to. Words often fail us. How is man to express heavenly ideas using earthly language? The joy of drama is its ability to communicate profound ideas, often with simple elements, for those who have eyes to see. Drama, which uses all the senses, speaks to the intuitive side of man, which through God’s Grace can help us understand who we are and our relationship to God. For as noted Christian author and educator Frank E. Gaeblein has told us, “Christian education is the living union of subject matter and the infinite pattern of God’s truth”. A careful study of drama equips the students with the grammar of dramatic artistic endeavor with the study of technique and style germane to a particular epoch. The students are taught to observe carefully the play being studied, see how the drama reflects that particular culture, and how it relates to the human condition. Through this satisfying and fun process the student begins to see that drama in its whole-some sense is a reflection of Truth, Beauty and Goodness, and gives them the ability and confidence to be communicators for Christ.” -Gaebelein, Frank E, The Pattern of God’s Truth.
